1. Start Here: Polymer Clay Earring Basics

DIY Polymer Clay Earrings Instructions

What You’ll Need

Everything in your kit plus:

  • Baking tray (optional, you may bake clay pieces directly on your cermanic tile)

  • Baking paper (if working on a wooden table)

  • Household oven (oven thermomters come in handy here! Household oven temperatures are often a little off)

  • Optional: craft knife, baby wipes, Loctite Super Glue, textured surfaces like sandpaper. 

Step 1 - Prepare Your Workspace

  1. Wash your hands to avoid dust or lint getting into the clay.

  2. Lay down baking paper and clean cermanic tile.

  • Kitchen benches also make excellent work surfaces! 

Step 2 - Condition the Clay

  1. Squish the clay between your fingers to soften it for 30 seconds. 

  2. Gently roll, press, and fold it until it’s smooth and easy to shape.

  3. Check the Clay is well conditioned: 

    • It feels soft and smooth, but still firm enough to hold its shape.

    • Easy to roll out without cracking, but not sticky.

    • When you bend it, it flexes gently without splitting.

    • You can press a shape with your cutter and get clean, crisp edges.

    • It feels warm, pliable, and elastic, similar to soft playdough but slightly firmer.​

  • Mix new clay colours: Press the colours together roll, fold, and repeat until the colours are fully blended and smooth. Lighten dark shades with white, add small amounts of black clay to darken. 

  • For a marbled effect, stop mixing earlier so you still see streaks of each colour.

Step 3 - Create & Cut Designs

  1. Roll your clay out evenly to about 2-3mm thick. 

    • Put an acrylic plate (or a stack of ~10 playing cards) on each side of the ball of clay. These act as guides for thickness.

    • Place your roller on top of the clay, lined up with the plates.

    • Gently press down and roll away from you, keeping even pressure and the roller touching the plates.

    • Roll a few times, then lift and rotate the clay 90° and repeat to keep the sheet even.

    • If your clay wants to stick in the cutter, roll it on the ceramic tile. This helps the clay stay on the tile instead of sticking inside the cutters.

    • Note: Watch out for air bubbles. Slice any air bubbles open with your needle tool and re-roll. 

  2. Add any textures or designs ontop of your clay slab. Raw clay sticks well to raw clay! 

  3. Choose Cutters. Press the cutter straight down, wiggle slightly, and lift.

  4. Remove the excess clay around the shapes.

  5. If you need to lift the clay from the surface without distorting it, slide the flexible blade underneath and gently lift. 

Step 4 - Make any Holes

(If your design needs jump rings or hooks)

  1. Use the brown micro-circle cutter to make a small hole 1–2 mm from the edge of your clay piece.

  2. Press straight down, twist slightly if needed, then lift.

  3. Poke excess clay out of the cutter with the needle tool. 

Step 5 - Bake Your Creations

  1. Place your pieces on a baking-paper-lined tray or bake directly on the ceramic tile. 

  2. Bake in a household oven at 130°C for 45 minutes (longer baking time is no problem!)

  3. If you intend to add stud posts (without using loctite super glue), see step 6B

Step 6 - Assemble Your Earrings

  1. If you’d like smooth edges, gently sand them using the included sanding block, as if you were filing your nails

  2. Open jump rings or circular part of the earring hooks using jump ring opener tool and pliers. Note: never pull it apart sideways, just twist it open.

  3. Slide the clay earring piece onto the jump ring or hook. 

  4. Use your pliers to twist the ring closed, making sure the ends meet perfectly.

  5. If using super glue to attach stud posts, I recommend Loctite Super Glue Liquid or Gel Control.

    1. Squeeze a small drop of glue onto the clay piece.

    2. Place the stud post ontop of the glue and press for 5 seconds.

    3. Allow the glue to dry for 1 hour to touch and 24 hours to fully set. 

Step 6B — Embedding Stud Posts (Optional)

  1. Remove the clay piece from the oven after 10 minutes of baking. This allows it to not loose it's shape during the embedding process, while still being able to add more clay onto the piece. ​​

  2. Roll a thin sheet of clay (1mm thick) and cut a small circle using the red or yellow metal circle cutter. 

  3. Place the metal stud post in position on the back of your semi-baked clay piece. 

  4. Slide the unbaked clay circle through the pointy part of the stud post and move it down towards the base

  5. Gently smooth out the edges around the circle so it attaches to the semi-baked piece. 

  6. Return the clay piece to the oven for a further 35 minutes of baking. 

Care Instructions

  • Clean your clay cutters in warm, soapy water. Do not put them in the dishwasher, as high temperatures can warp the PLA material.

  • Keep your earrings away from perfumes, chemicals, and water to preserve their finish.

  • Wipe clay pieces gently with a damp cloth if needed.

  • To remove small blemishes or lint, use a light dab of acetone on a Q-tip, applied carefully.

Troubleshooting Clay Conditioning

If your clay is too stiff or cracks:

  • This means your clay is not conditioned enough

  • Continue conditoning by rolling it in your hand, fold, press, and roll until smooth and flexible.

If your clay is too soft or sticky (over-conditioned): 

Try these options

  • "Leech" the clay from excess oils;

    1. place clay between two sheets of paper​

    2. place book ontop and leave for 20+ mins

    3. Remove paper, excess oils should leave a mark on the paper as they came out of the clay. 

  • Roll it on a cool surface like a ceramic tile.

  • Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes if needed.

  • Add fresh unconditioned clay to firm it up. 

Conditioning FAQS:

1. How long does caly stay conditioned? Once mixed, it remains mixed. Some oils and moisture naturally leeches out over time, but if you're coming back to the clay after a day or so it will only need a little bit of warming in your hands. 

2. What should I do with my scrap clay? Store it for later! Combine scrap clay together to make new colours. 

Help! Clay is Sticking in my Cutters

Steps to avoid clay sticking in your cutter

  1.  "Burnish" the clay to your ceramic tile.

    1. Press your rolled clay onto a ceramic tile or smooth surface.

    2. Roll over it gently with your roller so the clay sticks slightly. This keeps it from lifting with the cutter.

  2. Double Cut Method: Especially for detailed cutters

    1. Push the cutter in half way.

    2. Gentle lift it up to 'release' the clay.

    3. Press the cutter all the way through to get a clean cut without sticking. 

  3. Use Cornflour (cornstarch).

    1. Lightly dip the cutter in cornflour

    2. Tap off the excess.

    3. Cut into the clay as usual.

    4. Remove any leftover cornflour from the clay using a soft brush.

Other FAQs

  1. Will the Clay dry out? No. Polymer clay doesn’t dry in the air. Keep it in a sealed bag or container to stay soft indefinitely.

  2. Why did my clay crack after baking? The answer is almost always oven temperature. Buy an oven thermomter and check pieces are baking at 130 deg celcius. 

  3. Can Children make earrings? Yes! With supervision, kids can enjoy rolling, cutting, and assembling, but be careful with oven temperatures, pliers, and glue. Consider purchasing hair clip bases or key rings. 

  4. Where can I buy more clay? Sculpey clay can be found in store at Officeworks and Spotlight. My favourite place to purchase is www.myclayco.com.au. I also sell add on clay. 

  5. Can I combine clay brands? Yes, but check the package for baking time. Avoid using Sculpey III. Fimo, Cernit, Sculpey Premo, Sculpey Souffle are all lovely options for jewellery making.  

  6. Can I paint or varnish my clay pieces? Acrylic paint can be used on clay but must be sealed (otherwise it will scratch off) using a clay varnish, sculpey glaze or resin. 

  7. Can I bake clay more than once? Yes! Baking clay for longer is completely fine, you can't over bake if the temperature is correct.
